Following the end of the Six-Day War in June 1967, the international community scrambled to address the dramatically altered political and territorial landscape of the Middle East. Israel had captured vast areas of land—including the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights—shifting the balance of power and creating new diplomatic and humanitarian challenges. In response, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 242 on November 22, 1967. Drafted primarily by British Ambassador Lord Caradon, the resolution became the foundational document for future peace negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
