Operation Joshua was the follow-up to Operation Moses, launched by the Israeli government and the United States to rescue more Ethiopian Jews left behind in Sudan. Conducted with U.S. military support, the operation succeeded in transporting around 500 Ethiopian Jews to Israel.
Following the abrupt halt of Operation Moses, Operation Joshua was launched in March 1985 to rescue the remaining Ethiopian Jews in Sudan. It was a joint operation involving Israel and the United States, utilizing U.S. military aircraft to fly around 500 Beta Israel from Sudan to Israel. The operation was coordinated by Mossad and U.S. Vice President George H. W. Bush’s office, underlining the strategic relationship between the two nations. Though smaller in scale, Operation Joshua was a vital continuation of Israel’s commitment to Ethiopian Jewry, serving as a bridge between Moses and Solomon.
